the reader’s guide to
the DAY of the TRIFFIDS

About Me

The Day of the Triffids is one of my favourite books. Having completed a website on another of my favourites, Wuthering Heights, I thought about creating another 'reader's guide' and decided on this one.

It is one of the best known science fictions novels, and most people have a rough idea of what a triffid is even if they have never read the book or seen a screen adaptation. Indeed, the word even exists in the dictionary:

trif-fid 'trifid (also Trif-fid)
(in science fiction) one of a race of predatory plants that are capable of growing to a gigantic size and are possessed of locomotor ability and a poisonous sting.

ORIGIN coined by John Wyndham in The Day of the Triffids (1951)

The triffids, actually, are only part of the story – much of it concerns how people would survive (or not) a major disaster. It looks at possible communities and how different people would react.

If you are just beginning the wonderful tale of Bill and Josella, hopefully this site will help you along but be warned – because the site goes into detail, you will find many spoilers.

If you wish to contact me, you can use  the Feedback Form. If I can help you on aspects of the book, I will (but don't expect me to write an essay for you). If you enjoyed the site and just want to say "thanks", that's fine – I read every message and it's always good to know that my work has been worth it.

Citation: if you wish to cite this website, it was completely written in 2007 (apart from the review of the 2009 adaptation obviously). It was created purely by myself and has no links with any other person or company. Most pages have a box with a light blue background which indicates the source of the page's contents (not visible on mobile screens).
